Quarry Stair

Bristol · Public · 2022 · Complete

A cantilevered concrete stair turning through a tall board-marked void

A public stair cut into a disused quarry face, replacing a forty-minute walk around with a two-minute climb.

The brief was a handrail. We argued for a building, on the grounds that a stair of that height in that weather is a room whether you design it as one or not.

It is one flight, turning twice, lit from a single slot above. The concrete was poured against boards salvaged from the site hoarding.
